Where best to promote and encourage a love for reading than the Library environment! I have fond childhood memories of visiting the old Bridgetown Public Library on Coleridge Street on Saturday mornings to borrow books. I can close my eyes and still recall the aroma on entering the building, the excitement but yet slight intimidation evoked possibly by the ordered and quiet ambience, and the overwhelming feeling of much choice in the literature.

The Literacy Project Charity devotes much of its operations to the National Library Service, where volunteers are deployed to facilitate Reading sessions with children of a wide age range and from various communities across Barbados. We endeavour to encourage, promote and connect the importance of reading, writing and meaningful and active engagement with knowledge, to lifelong learning.

Within our sessions’ participants are encouraged to not only have dialogue about what they read, but to adopt a healthy questioning stance. This develops early skills of critical analysis and becoming what we call an active learner as opposed to a passive one. We also promote written expression of thought via stimulating activities, and, in an effort to enhance confidence in vocal expression, their presentation skills are also exercised.
